In the outback areas, the temperature variations are greater. Summer maximums can range from 34° C in the southern outback up to 37° C in the north. Winter minimums typically range from 4° C in the southern outback up to 8° C in the northern areas. Some outback areas may experience frost on winter mornings. Queensland gets the majority of its rainfall during summer. Monsoonal cyclones (hurricanes) occasionally form in the Coral Sea during the summer months, generating wide storm fronts that deliver much of the rainfall along the coastal strip.
Queensland is a holiday destination 12 months of the year. If personal comfort is important then the June to August winter period may suit your vacation best because summer outdoors in the Central, North and Far North regions can be uncomfortable. The heat levels in the Outback during summer can cause discomfort and winter is the best time to visit. The South East region and the Great Barrier Reef are the major holiday destinations and generally have milder summer weather. Queensland is a very popular destination and visitors should always allow for an increased demand for accommodation and travel bookings during the school vacation periods. The demand for Gold Coast accommodation and Sunshine Coast accommodation in particular requires bookings to be made months in advance for holiday periods.
