The region is noted for the World Heritage listed Fraser Island, whale watching from Hervey Bay and North Stradbroke Island and the famous unspoiled beaches of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. These are amongst the top holiday destinations in Australia and offer access to both secluded waterways and surf beaches as well as theme park attractions to suit all tastes. Inland from the coast are the elevated hinterlands with rolling landscapes and cool rainforests. The point of entry for the majority of visitors is Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. Brisbane is renowned for its climate and laid-back lifestyle and in recent years has developed into a modern, cosmopolitan city where the options for business and recreational accommodation are second to none.
Toowoomba, 2 hours west of Brisbane, is the major centre of the elevated Darling Downs agricultural belt, and boasts spectacular gardens in early spring. Darling Downs centres such as Warwick, Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi and Dalby have much of Queensland's early history on display. Self drive holidays in motor homes and campervans are a great way to see the best of South East Queensland. With an excellent road network and plenty of road side parks and camping spots, there are lots of opportunities to get off the beaten track.
