From the sugar fields of Ingham in the north to the cattle country around Rockhampton in the south, this is the visitor's welcome to the tropics. Townsville is the major city and a centre for Barrier Reef dive trips, cruising and sailing.

Highlight of this region is the idyllic Whitsunday Islands, a premier holiday destination and home to many of the Great Barrier Reef holiday resorts. Airlie Beach is the base for many of the sailing and diving operators and a departure point for many reef excursions, sailing and cruising.

Further south is Mackay which provides access to Brampton Island as well as alternative access the Whitsunday Islands.
