Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef - 2000 km along the Queensland coast from Gladstone in the south to Cape York. With more than 2900 individual reefs and 71 coral islands, the reef is home to spectacular marine life and bird populations. National parks are common on the islands and park rules apply to all visitors.

Islands and reefs are usually in remote locations and access is via resort stays, day trips with tour operators or self-sail rentals. The holiday resorts, currently 23 in number, are built on coral islands and many have their own fringing reef.

Resorts offer a year round season and the departure points for the islands are all accessible by road, rail and air. Most resorts provide shuttle services for guests.

The location and theme of each resort determines which activities are available to guests. Typical activities are swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, reef walking, coral viewing, sailing, yacht charter, jet skiing, parasailing, sailboarding, kayaking, catamarans, canoes, big game fishing and whale watching.

Learn to dive classes are available in most centres and resorts.
